The US Energy Information Administration's latest nuclear generation dataset, released July 23 with figures through May 2026, shows 94 nuclear generating units currently holding full-power operating licenses across the country. Combined capacity across the fleet stands at approximately 96.8 gigawatts, according to the agency's preliminary 2026 figures.
EIA tracks monthly generation and capacity data by state and by individual reactor, with records extending back to 2003 for state-level detail and to 1957 for annual totals. The agency's next scheduled data release covering nuclear generation is set for August 2026.
The dataset is a primary reference point for utilities, grid planners, and policymakers monitoring nuclear power's contribution to the broader US electricity supply as demand grows from data center expansion, reshoring of manufacturing, and electrification. EIA's separate Annual Energy Outlook 2026 projects that nuclear capacity will remain largely flat under most scenarios through the coming decades, though the agency notes generation could increase meaningfully in the 2040s if natural gas prices rise enough to make new nuclear construction more economically competitive.
EIA maintains the nuclear dataset as part of its broader nuclear and uranium data program, which also tracks uranium fuel supply, spent fuel inventories, and daily reactor outage status across the fleet.
