Companies selected for federal uranium enrichment funding began outlining how they will use the awards to rebuild domestic fuel supply, following a Department of Energy program aimed at reducing US reliance on foreign sources. The effort directs $2.7 billion toward expanding enrichment capacity, with General Matter, American Centrifuge Operating, and Orano Federal Services each receiving roughly $900 million to provide enrichment services.

A separate award of about $28 million went to Global Laser Enrichment to continue developing a next-generation enrichment method. The DOE framed the package as a way to expand capacity for low-enriched uranium used in existing reactors while jumpstarting supply chains for high-assay low-enriched uranium, or HALEU, the fuel that many advanced reactor designs will require.

Recipients described phased plans to add centrifuge capacity and stand up production, though executives cautioned that building enrichment infrastructure takes years and significant private capital alongside the federal contribution. Industry observers noted that domestic HALEU supply has been a bottleneck for advanced reactor developers, several of which need the fuel before demonstration units can operate.

The awards sit within a wider federal commitment to nuclear energy. Congressional appropriations directed additional funding to the DOE's Office of Nuclear Energy, and a separate round of research grants supported dozens of advanced technology projects across the country.

Supporters argued that restoring domestic enrichment strengthens both energy and national security by reducing dependence on imported fuel. The near-term test will be whether awardees can move from planning to operating capacity on the timelines that reactor developers are counting on.
