Georgia Power says more than 1,100 generation employees across the state keep its power plants, including nuclear units, running through August, historically one of the highest demand months of the year. The company marked August as Generation Appreciation Month, recognizing the teams that operate, maintain and inspect its plants around the clock.
"When our customers flip the light switch or adjust their A/C systems to just the right temperature this summer, there are thousands of employees working hard to make that happen," said Rick Anderson, senior vice president and senior production officer at Georgia Power.
The company's generation fleet, which includes nuclear, natural gas, hydro, solar and battery storage, posted an equivalent forced outage rate of 1.67% in 2025 for non-nuclear plants, among the best marks in company history. Georgia Power is working with the Georgia Public Service Commission to expand its generation mix further, with plans that include nuclear uprates alongside new natural gas, battery storage, solar and hydropower additions across the state.
The buildout is expected to create nearly 250 new full-time generation jobs and support more than 3,000 construction jobs in the coming years. Georgia Power, a subsidiary of Southern Company, serves 2.8 million customers in all but four of Georgia's 159 counties, an area that includes the metro Atlanta region.
