The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has issued an environmental assessment and finding of no significant impact clearing Disa Technologies to use its high-pressure slurry ablation technology to clean up abandoned uranium mine waste at the Mary Ann site in Montrose County, Colorado. The Wyoming-based mineral processing company submitted its request to begin operations in March, and the NRC accepted it in June before completing the review this month.
At the Mary Ann site, Disa Tech plans to process roughly 1,656 cubic meters of legacy mine waste, yielding about 1,839 tons of fines concentrates containing uranium and thorium. The company will build a radiologically restricted area that includes the processing equipment, a storage area for the recovered material, the original waste pile, and a stockpile of crushed rock. Before the slurry process begins, a rock crusher will break down the material. Disa Tech plans to install air monitoring equipment, use water to control dust, and build secondary containment to keep any spilled water on site. One truckload of recovered concentrate is expected to leave the site each day for a permitted storage facility in Naturita, Colorado.
To carry out the cleanup and expand domestic uranium production, Disa Tech has formed a new subsidiary, Disa Uranium Corp, based in Casper, Wyoming. The new company has also acquired a portfolio of permitted, past-producing uranium mines and projects in Utah. Disa Uranium's chief executive said the company's priority is remediating abandoned uranium mine sites across the West while recovering uranium and vanadium from the waste, part of a broader push to rebuild a secure domestic nuclear fuel supply.
