The Nuclear Regulatory Commission held a virtual question and answer session on Aug. 11 covering its proposed rule to restructure how commercial reactor license applications are reviewed, according to reporting from the American Nuclear Society.
The proposal represents the first significant overhaul of the agency's reactor licensing framework in decades. NRC issued materials earlier in 2026 describing the new process, and the session gave applicants, vendors and utilities an opportunity to question staff on implementation details ahead of the comment period.
The rulemaking follows a period of unusually high licensing throughput at the agency. NRC approved 13 reactor license renewals in 2025. During 2026 the commission completed subsequent license renewals for reactors at the Hatch and Robinson plants in reviews lasting 12 months or less, a pace that compares favorably to historical renewal timelines.
The agency also issued its first commercial reactor construction permit under the revised approach earlier in the year, and separately dockets applications for advanced designs as they arrive.
Licensing timelines have become a central variable in whether announced nuclear projects reach construction. Developers assessing new capacity weigh regulatory review duration alongside capital cost and offtake arrangements, and multi year uncertainty in the review stage affects financing terms.
By July 2026, reactors approved for operation to 80 years included units at Turkey Point, Peach Bottom, Surry, North Anna, Monticello, Oconee, Virgil C. Summer, Point Beach, Browns Ferry, Dresden, St. Lucie, H.B. Robinson and Edwin I. Hatch.
