The Nuclear Regulatory Commission approved a 20-year license renewal for Georgia Power's Edwin I. Hatch Nuclear Plant near Baxley, Georgia, extending the operating license for Unit 1 through 2054 and Unit 2 through 2058. The approval allows the two-unit plant to continue operating for as long as 80 years combined and preserves roughly 1.8 gigawatts of generating capacity on the regional grid.
The NRC completed the review in under 12 months after accepting Southern Nuclear's renewal application in June 2025, making Hatch only the second license renewal the agency has finalized on that timeline under its newer streamlined review process. Duke Energy's Robinson Unit 2 in South Carolina was the first renewal completed on a similarly compressed schedule earlier in the year.
Plant Hatch has operated since the 1970s and, together with Plant Vogtle near Augusta, supplies roughly a quarter of Georgia's electricity. Georgia Power has said additional nuclear capacity will be needed over the long term and has proposed power uprates at units at both Hatch and Vogtle in its 2025 Integrated Resource Plan.
Nuclear energy has been part of Georgia's generation mix for more than 50 years. The Hatch renewal comes as utilities across the Southeast face rising electricity demand tied to data center and industrial growth, driving continued interest in extending the operating life of existing reactors as one option for meeting load growth alongside new construction.
