NuScale Power is putting nuclear specific artificial intelligence tools into its engineering and licensing workflow as it pushes its 77 MWe small modular reactor toward commercial deployment. The Oregon based developer announced the arrangement on 25 August 2026 with Nuclearn, which supplies the AtomAssist platform, and Nuclear Promise X, which handles implementation inside project teams.
The problem the tools address is volume. Advanced reactor programmes carry large libraries of engineering information, licensing evidence, technical standards and institutional knowledge, and design teams have to retrieve the right document quickly to hold a schedule. An initial proof of concept cut information retrieval time by up to 80 percent.
The platform differs from general purpose language models in one respect that matters to regulators. Answers trace back to the original controlled source documentation, and the underlying models are trained on nuclear terminology, design data and licensing regulations rather than open web text.
"NuScale is building a transformative deployment model to integrate NuScale Power Modules (NPMs) into nuclear power plants in the near-term, which requires executing with speed, precision, and confidence," said Dr Jose Reyes, chief technology officer of NuScale Power.
The NuScale Power Module is a pressurised water reactor with steam generation and heat exchange built into a single 77 MWe unit running standard light water reactor fuel. It was the first small modular reactor design to win approval from the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission. NuScale markets the modules as VOYGR plants, with a twelve module VOYGR-12 configuration rated at 924 MWe.
