Plant Vogtle in eastern Georgia remains the largest nuclear power station in the United States and a central pillar of the state electricity supply. With the addition of Units 3 and 4, the plant reached a total capacity of 4,536 megawatts, making it the only four reactor nuclear site in the country and the largest single generator of carbon free electricity in the nation.
The two newest units came online in stages. Unit 3 entered commercial operation in July 2023 and Unit 4 in April 2024. Together with the existing Units 1 and 2, the four reactors power more than 1 million homes and businesses, with each of the new units producing about 1,100 megawatts. Operated by Southern Nuclear for Georgia Power and its partners, the plant helps meet rising electricity demand across the Southeast.
The expansion recently marked the one year anniversary of full four unit operation. Georgia Power has continued to invest in the site, including the installation of higher enriched uranium fuel at Units 1 and 2, a step aimed at extending fuel cycles and supporting reliable output from the older reactors.
As one of the newest large nuclear projects completed in the United States, Vogtle serves as a reference point for the broader industry. Its performance, workforce, and role in the regional grid continue to inform how utilities and regulators approach the next wave of nuclear construction and capacity planning across the country.
