Plant Vogtle near Waynesboro, Georgia stands as the largest nuclear power station in the United States, a position it secured after Units 3 and 4 entered service. With a total capacity of about 4,536 megawatts, it is the only nuclear plant in the country operating four reactors, each producing roughly 1,100 megawatts.

The newest units came online in stages. Unit 3 began commercial operation on July 31, 2023, and Unit 4 followed on April 29, 2024. Together with the older Units 1 and 2, the plant supplies power to more than 1 million homes and businesses across the state. The completion of the expansion made Vogtle the largest generator of emission-free electricity in the nation, a significant addition to Georgia's baseload supply as regional demand rises.

Ownership is shared among several Georgia utilities. Georgia Power holds 45.7 percent, Oglethorpe Power Corporation 30 percent, the Municipal Electric Authority of Georgia 22.7 percent, and Dalton Utilities 1.6 percent. The plant is one of three nuclear facilities in the Southern Company system and a central piece of the state's generation portfolio.

Vogtle's scale gives it outsized importance for Georgia's grid at a moment when data center construction and population growth are pushing electricity demand higher across the metro Atlanta region and beyond. As one of the few large reactors completed in the United States in recent decades, the plant also serves as a reference point for the cost, schedule, and performance of large-scale nuclear construction.
