Power generation company Vistra announced 20-year power purchase agreements with Meta covering more than 2,600 megawatts of zero-carbon energy from three nuclear plants in the PJM grid region, marking one of the largest corporate commitments to nuclear power in the United States to date. The agreements combine 2,176 megawatts of existing operating generation with 433 megawatts of new capacity created through equipment upgrades, known as uprates, at the company's Perry and Davis-Besse plants in Ohio and its Beaver Valley plant in Pennsylvania.
Vistra said more than 15 percent of the contracted capacity announced represents genuinely new generation being added to the PJM grid rather than existing output being reallocated. Company officials said the agreements provide the certainty needed to invest in extending the operating life of the three plants, all of which have already received initial license renewal from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Vistra now plans to pursue subsequent license renewals that would extend operations at each reactor by another 20 years.
Meta's head of global energy, Urvi Parekh, said the company is investing in nuclear power because it provides the clean, reliable electricity needed to support its artificial intelligence operations. Meta's purchases under the agreements begin in late 2026, with the full 2,609 megawatts of contracted capacity expected to be online by 2034. Company officials noted that Vistra had only acquired the three plants in 2023, after they had previously been on a path toward retirement.
Elected officials from both Ohio and Pennsylvania voiced support for the agreements, citing the jobs and tax revenue tied to the plants. Approximately 3,000 project-related jobs across engineering, construction, and planned outage work are expected over the roughly nine-year span of the uprate projects, according to Vistra, in addition to the more than 1,800 permanent, full-time positions the three plants already support.
