Westinghouse Electric Company and Amentum announced a series of agreements on August 4, 2026, aimed at scaling deployment of the AP1000 nuclear reactor and advancing regulatory approval of the AP300 small modular reactor. The agreements fall under Westinghouse's APX platform strategy, which links the established AP1000 design to its smaller AP300 derivative so that operating experience and NRC-licensed technology from the larger reactors can support faster review of the newer design.
Westinghouse CEO Dan Sumner said the collaboration with Amentum is expected to accelerate NRC licensing of the AP300 while the two companies separately work to expand engineering and execution capacity for delivering 1-gigawatt reactors at scale. Amentum CEO John Heller said the partnership responds to a widening global market for firm baseload power and will support delivery of advanced nuclear technology alongside growth in AI-driven electricity demand.
Westinghouse and Amentum have collaborated previously on nuclear projects in the US and Europe. Co-owner Cameco has said Westinghouse holds a pipeline of potential deployment opportunities for 91 AP1000 reactors totaling roughly 105 gigawatts across global markets, including up to 10 US units backed by American Nuclear Supply Chain Loans the Department of Energy announced earlier in 2026, and up to 10 more units tied to a strategic partnership among Cameco, Brookfield and the Department of Commerce.
The AP300 design, unveiled in 2023, uses the same pressurized light-water technology, structural components, safety systems and fuel as the operating AP1000 units, an approach Westinghouse says should help it draw on regulatory approvals the larger design already holds in the US, UK and China.
