Two of the companies leading the Department of Energy's Advanced Reactor Demonstration Program reported fresh progress this week on their next-generation nuclear projects. X-energy CEO Clay Sell said during the company's second-quarter earnings call that the Department of Energy notified the company it would receive additional cost-shared funding for its Long Mott project, which calls for building four Xe-100 reactors at Dow's chemical production facility in Seadrift, Texas. The project is expected to be the first grid-scale advanced reactor deployed to serve an industrial site in North America.

Sell also highlighted other recent developments, including long-term agreements for high-assay low-enriched uranium enrichment services with two fuel suppliers, an agreement to expand nuclear-grade graphite manufacturing capacity, and an economic development grant from the state of Tennessee supporting the company's fuel fabrication campus in Oak Ridge. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is expected to complete its construction permit review for the Seadrift project later this year, with a decision likely in the first half of 2027. X-energy also plans to submit a separate construction permit application next year for a project in Washington state involving Amazon and Energy Northwest.

Separately, TerraPower announced new agreements with two South Korean companies to develop and commercialize its Natrium reactor design in the United States, Korea, and other international markets. One of the companies will serve as TerraPower's construction contractor for future Natrium units. TerraPower is currently building its first Natrium reactor, a sodium-cooled fast reactor with molten salt heat storage, in Kemmerer, Wyoming.
