X-energy and Centrus Energy signed a definitive agreement for Centrus to supply enrichment services for low-enriched and high-assay low-enriched uranium to support X-energy's Xe-100 small modular reactor program. The deal links the two companies operating the first two Nuclear Regulatory Commission-licensed HALEU fuel facilities in U.S. history, building directly on federal programs that helped stand up both operations.
Centrus will enrich HALEU at its American Centrifuge Plant in Piketon, Ohio, a facility that grew out of Department of Energy-backed HALEU production efforts. The material will then move to X-energy's TRISO-X fuel campus in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, built under the DOE's Advanced Reactor Demonstration Program. TRISO-X received a 40-year Special Nuclear Material License from the NRC in February, the first new fuel fabrication license the agency has issued in more than 50 years.
X-energy had already secured its first Xe-100 fuel supply, for a project with Dow, through the DOE's HALEU Availability Program, a federal effort bridging the gap until commercial enrichment capacity comes online. The Centrus deal extends that federally seeded supply chain into a long-term commercial contract, phased to scale with X-energy's broader pipeline.
