Centrus Energy Corp. has signed a new contract to supply X-energy with enrichment services for low-enriched uranium and high-assay, low-enriched uranium, backing X-energy plans to deploy Xe-100 small modular reactors and TRISO-X fuel. The enriched material will be produced at Centrus American Centrifuge Plant in Piketon, Ohio. Under the agreement, X-energy will provide Centrus with prepayments to help fund expansion of its domestic commercial enrichment capacity.
The deal adds to a broader push by Centrus to build out US enrichment capacity while securing early-stage funding commitments. The company recently received a $900 million Department of Energy award to support high-assay, low-enriched uranium production at the same Piketon facility. Centrus president and CEO Amir Vexler said the contract validates Centrus as the go-to, derisked supplier of the fuel to the global market.
Separately, X-energy subsidiary TRISO-X has acquired roughly 70 acres of land adjacent to its TX-1 nuclear fuel campus in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, expanding the site to more than 180 acres to support continued construction. The facility is set to become the first Category II fuel cycle plant built in the United States, following a special nuclear material license the company obtained from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in February.
The agreements arrive as uranium prices hold near $86 per pound, with long-term contract pricing at its highest level since 2008 amid growing utility demand tied to new reactor construction and AI-driven data center power needs.
