A World Gold Council chart published September 9, 2026 tracks monthly global gold ETF flows by region from January 2024 through August 2026, alongside total holdings in tonnes. The chart groups flows by year: 4 billion dollars in 2024, 89 billion dollars in 2025 and 29 billion dollars year to date in 2026.
Global gold-backed ETFs added 18 billion dollars in August, the second largest monthly inflow in value terms on record. North American funds took in 7.7 billion dollars, their third-largest month on record, and European funds added 7.9 billion dollars, the region's strongest month ever. Asian funds added 2 billion dollars, and funds in other regions added 234 million dollars.
Collective holdings rose 121 tonnes to a record 4,189 tonnes. The higher gold price and strong inflows lifted total assets under management 16 percent to 615 billion dollars. Year to date, inflows of 29 billion dollars equal a 160-tonne increase in holdings. North American funds recorded a 13 billion dollar outflow in March, the largest on the chart, and August's inflow helped offset it.
The council also reported that average daily gold trading volume rose 21 percent in August to 430 billion dollars. Gold ETF trading volume jumped 83 percent to 8.7 billion dollars per day, with North American-listed funds accounting for more than 73 percent of ETF trading activity. COMEX net long positions rose 39 percent, or 212 tonnes, to 753 tonnes during the month.
