The intraday swing covered real ground. Kitco recorded a day's range between $63.40 and $65.78, a spread of $2.38 an ounce, or roughly 3.7 percent of the low. Converted to other weights, the same quote works out to $2.10 per gram and $2,104.30 per kilogram.

Those two quotes place the gold-to-silver ratio near 67 to 1, meaning about 67 ounces of silver carry the price of a single ounce of gold.

The wider precious metals complex moved higher across the board in the same session. Platinum traded at $1,738.00 an ounce, up 1.58 percent. Palladium reached $1,303.00, up 0.85 percent. Rhodium, the thinnest market of the group, quoted at $8,550.00 an ounce after a gain of $125.00.

Silver posted the largest single-day percentage move of the five metals Kitco tracks on its live price board, outpacing gold by nearly a full percentage point and reflecting the sharper swings that come with a smaller market carrying both investment and industrial buyers.
