Silver futures opened at $64.18 per ounce on Wednesday, September 16, gaining half a percent from the prior session's close. Prices continued rising through the morning session, touching $65.08 by 6:42 a.m. Eastern time as US markets positioned ahead of a closely watched Federal Reserve meeting.

According to CME Group's FedWatch tool, traders assigned a 92.5 percent probability to a quarter point rate increase at the meeting, up from 86.5 percent on Monday and 69.4 percent the previous Friday. The rising odds mark the first time in three years that markets have priced in a Fed rate hike with this much confidence.

Higher interest rates typically weigh on precious metals because bullion and coins generate no yield of their own, making interest bearing assets relatively more attractive when rates climb. Despite that headwind, silver has posted strong year over year gains, trading roughly 51 percent above where it stood twelve months earlier, even as prices sit about 3 percent below where they stood a week ago and 1 percent below last month's level.

Industry analysts continue to point to structural supply tightness as a longer term support for prices. The Silver Institute's most recent survey found the global silver market has run a deficit for five consecutive years, with a sixth consecutive shortfall forecast for 2026.
