The American Transportation Research Institute has released research ranking the telematics measures that motor carriers consider most valuable for safety, operations and maintenance. The report is titled From Telematics Data to Decisions: High-Value Performance Metrics for Trucking Operations.
ATRI built the study around a carrier-based assessment of key performance indicators generated by telematics systems. Respondents scored each metric on importance and reported whether their own operation tracks it. The resulting gap analysis compares what fleets say matters against what they measure in practice.
In the operations category, managing cost per mile carried the highest importance score of any metric in the survey. Only 73 percent of respondents said they use it. That spread between stated value and reported adoption appears across several categories in the report.
On the safety side, the four most widely adopted metrics were critical events, speeding, risky driving behavior and hard braking. ATRI presents those alongside less common measures that scored well on importance, giving carriers a reference point for reviewing the dashboards they already run.
The findings are aimed at both fleets and telematics providers. ATRI frames the KPI gap analysis as a blueprint for focusing attention on the measures with the greatest operational return, and the report covers safety, maintenance and operations categories separately.
