Brake and tire defects accounted for the largest share of out-of-service orders during the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance's annual International Roadcheck, according to results reported this week. The three-day inspection event ran May 12 through 14 and covered tens of thousands of commercial vehicles and drivers across North America.
Inspectors carried out 44,047 Level I, II and V inspections that included a vehicle component. Those checks produced 13,924 out-of-service vehicle violations and sidelined 10,350 vehicles or combinations, roughly 23.5 percent of the units examined. Brake system defects topped the list with 3,379 out-of-service violations, or 24.3 percent of the vehicle total. A separate category covering units with 20 percent or more defective brakes added 2,072 violations. Taken together, brake-related problems drove 39.1 percent of all out-of-service vehicle orders. Tire violations followed at 2,914, about 20.9 percent of the total. Cargo securement, the designated vehicle focus this year, ranked fourth with 1,724 orders.
On the driver side, inspectors completed 53,271 inspections and placed 3,184 drivers out of service. Missing medical certification produced the most driver orders at 1,072, or 27 percent. The alliance moved that violation to out-of-service status on a first offense in 2025, which helps explain the volume. Hours-of-service violations ranked second with 929, followed by no commercial driver's license at 620, English proficiency at 361 and false records of duty status at 266. Electronic logging device tampering, this year's driver focus area, generated 146 orders.
Most equipment and drivers cleared inspection. Roughly 81 percent of vehicles and 94.2 percent of drivers finished with no out-of-service violations, and 17,680 vehicles received alliance decals.
