The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance is holding its annual Brake Safety Week from Aug. 23 through Aug. 29, a seven day inspection and enforcement push aimed at commercial vehicle braking systems across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Certified inspectors will conduct routine commercial motor vehicle inspections during the week with an added emphasis on brake systems and components. Vehicles found with brake related out of service violations, or any other out of service condition, will be pulled from the road until the defect is corrected.
The specific emphasis area this year is brake drums and rotors. CVSA said drum and rotor problems can reduce a vehicle's braking efficiency, and that broken pieces of a drum or rotor may separate from a moving vehicle and damage other vehicles or injure people sharing the roadway.
Inspectors will report vehicle inspection results and brake related violation data to CVSA throughout the week. The organization plans to compile and analyze the submitted data and publish results later this year.
CVSA said the campaign also carries an education component. Inspectors and officials plan to talk with drivers, motor carriers and mechanics about the role preventive maintenance plays in reducing crashes. Carriers and drivers are asked to complete thorough pre trip and post trip inspections and confirm every brake component is working before a vehicle is dispatched.
CVSA is a nonprofit made up of local, state, provincial, territorial and federal commercial vehicle safety officials along with industry representatives in all three countries. Its stated goal for the campaign is to reduce violations, improve compliance rates and lower the number of crashes tied to brake failure.
