Trucking activity nudged up 0.1% in June after a 3.2% decline in May, according to the American Trucking Associations' advanced seasonally adjusted For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index, which stood at 113.1 for the month, based on 2015 levels equal to 100.

The index has now posted year-over-year declines for two straight months, down 0.1% from June 2025, an improvement from May's 0.7% year-over-year drop. Still, tonnage for the first half of 2026 remained up 1.4% from the same period a year earlier, driven largely by strength in the first quarter, said ATA Chief Economist Bob Costello. The not seasonally adjusted index, which measures raw tonnage changes, came in at 116.5 in June, 2.7% above May's reading of 113.4.

Trucking remains the dominant mode for domestic freight movement, carrying 72.7% of tonnage hauled by all transportation modes, according to ATA. The industry moved 11.27 billion tons of freight in 2024, and motor carriers collected $906 billion, or 76.9% of total revenue earned across all transport modes that year.

Costello noted that despite the flat tonnage figures, reduced trucking capacity over the past year has left many fleets feeling more stable than volume trends alone would suggest.
