The US Energy Information Administration released its weekly retail fuel price update on July 14, covering regular gasoline and on-highway diesel across national, regional, state and city levels. The national average price for regular gasoline reached $3.855 per gallon as of July 13, an increase of 7.8 cents from the prior week and 72.5 cents higher than the same week a year earlier.
Regional spreads widened. The Gulf Coast recorded the lowest regional average at $3.423 per gallon, while the West Coast remained the highest at $4.832. Excluding California, the West Coast average fell to $4.393. The East Coast averaged $3.765, up 6.5 cents week over week, with New England at $3.851, the Central Atlantic at $3.925 and the Lower Atlantic at $3.642. The Midwest averaged $3.662 and the Rocky Mountain region $3.823.
At the state level, California posted the highest average at $5.200 per gallon, up 2.5 cents from the previous week. Washington followed at $4.849 and New York at $3.984. Texas recorded the lowest reported state average at $3.371. Florida averaged $3.740, Ohio $3.799, Massachusetts $3.806, Minnesota $3.749 and Colorado $3.722.
Fuel cost movement carries direct operating consequences for carriers running national lanes, since the spread between the lowest and highest regional averages exceeded $1.40 per gallon during the reporting week. Separate market reporting placed the national on-highway diesel average at $4.796 per gallon for the week of July 13, up 21.8 cents from $4.578 the prior week. The next EIA update is scheduled for July 21.
