FedEx is putting $400 million into a new sorting facility at its World Hub in Memphis, Tennessee, underscoring the company's continued investment in the city that has anchored its global network for decades.
The project, internally known as Hercules, calls for a five story building spanning 1.6 million square feet, engineered to handle 250,000 packages an hour once it opens. Construction is scheduled to begin this fall and run through a planned spring 2031 opening. The new structure will replace an existing facility about 2,000 feet away and will connect to the recently opened Secondary 25 sorting center through a dedicated bridge, giving the company added operational flexibility without merging the two facilities into a single operation.
The Memphis investment comes even as FedEx works through a broader consolidation under its Network 2.0 initiative, which is closing distribution centers and ship centers elsewhere, including several in Tennessee, as the company merges its separate Express and Ground networks to cut costs. Company officials have not finalized staffing details for the new Memphis facility, but the scale of the project points to a sustained construction timeline and, eventually, additional operational jobs tied to the hub.
The dual trend, trimming smaller regional facilities while expanding flagship hub capacity, reflects how large parcel carriers are concentrating volume at fewer, larger sites as they manage rising operating costs and shifting freight patterns across the Southeast.
