Motor carriers faced two overlapping compliance deadlines in July 2026. The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance ran Operation Safe Driver Week from July 12 through July 18, directing roadside inspectors to focus on reckless, careless, and dangerous driving behavior. Enforcement officers issued warnings and citations for speeding, improper lane changes, following too closely, and distracted driving during the seven-day window.
A separate electronic logging device deadline arrived days later. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration removed several devices from its registered ELD list, and carriers still running Safe ELD or MYLOGS ELD had until July 7 to install replacement hardware. Drivers operating with a revoked device after the cutoff risk being placed out of service at roadside, a penalty that removes the truck and driver from revenue service until the violation is corrected.
The removals follow a broader FMCSA cleanup of its ELD registry. In February 2026 the agency struck nine devices from the approved list, with an April 14 replacement deadline attached to that action.
Elsewhere in the regulatory picture, no federal speed limiter mandate applies to commercial vehicles in 2026. FMCSA and NHTSA withdrew the long pending speed limiter proposal in a notice published July 24, 2025.
FMCSA has also signaled interest in substance use policy among drivers who operate commercial motor vehicles without a commercial driver license. The agency announced plans to collect information on how carriers prevent and enforce those policies, with public comments due August 21, 2026.
Industry groups advise fleet compliance managers to verify device registration status directly against the FMCSA list rather than relying on vendor assurances.
