The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration announced this week that it is making $217 million available to the U.S. trucking and bus industries, with funding aimed at strengthening supply chains, rooting out unsafe operators, expanding workforce opportunities and improving roadway safety. Applications are due by 11:59 p.m. ET on June 17, 2026.

The money is being distributed across four grant programs. The Commercial Motor Vehicle Grant Program supports state projects targeting unsafe driving in high-risk crash corridors. The Innovative Technology Development Grant Program funds the deployment of new technologies for enforcement and roadside inspections. The Commercial Motor Vehicle Operator Safety Training program supports training providers that prepare current and former members of the U.S. Armed Forces and other qualified individuals for careers behind the wheel, while additional funding supports state modernization of commercial driver's license systems.

Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy framed the investment as part of a broader effort to strengthen safety enforcement and workforce development across the industry. Federal officials said the grants will also fund safety enforcement training for state and local law enforcement officers who conduct commercial vehicle inspections.

States, educational institutions, nonprofit organizations and other industry partners are eligible to apply. The announcement comes as FMCSA continues a year of heightened enforcement activity in 2026, including stepped-up scrutiny of CDL issuance and driver qualification standards. Carriers and training providers across the Southeast, where freight corridors in Georgia, Tennessee and the Carolinas see some of the nation's heaviest truck traffic, are among those expected to compete for the funding.
