The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has moved forward with a series of enforcement actions and regulatory updates in 2026 that carriers cannot ignore. Most notably, FMCSA removed Safe ELD and MYLOGS ELD from its approved device list, placing both on the Revoked Devices list after each company failed to meet minimum requirements established under Title 49 CFR Appendix A to Subpart B of Part 395. Fleets operating either device faced an immediate compliance crisis.
Beyond ELD enforcement, FMCSA continued tightening oversight under the Trump administration's deregulatory framing -- a dynamic that has created mixed signals for fleet operators. While some anticipated broad rollbacks, the agency has maintained core safety enforcement while deferring or pausing several proposed rulemakings from prior years. The practical result for carriers is continued pressure on HOS compliance, driver qualification files, and drug and alcohol program management.
The political environment around trucking regulation has not removed liability risk. Carriers that assume lighter enforcement translates to lower compliance requirements have faced costly violations, particularly in areas such as controlled substances testing, vehicle inspection records, and entry-level driver training documentation.
Staying current on FMCSA rule status -- rather than reacting to enforcement -- remains the most cost-effective compliance strategy.
