The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has set off a wave of compliance adjustments across the trucking industry in 2026, with a new carrier scoring system and tightened driver qualification requirements taking center stage. The old BASIC safety categories have been replaced by a data-driven percentile model that compares carriers directly against peer fleets. Inspections now carry weighted scores, with the most recent roadside checks carrying the highest value, meaning a single defect can shift a carrier's standing immediately.
Driver qualification standards have also tightened. English language proficiency requirements and CDL eligibility rules are under stricter enforcement, and ELD device compliance is drawing additional scrutiny following several device decertifications. Carriers operating with any of nine recently revoked ELD systems, including GTS ELD, UTRUCKIN, and AirELD variants, had until February 12, 2026, to replace those units or face hours-of-service violations.
Fleet managers who stay ahead of these changes are finding that proactive compliance programs pay off in lower inspection failure rates and reduced insurance costs.
