Georgia is directing a large share of its current transportation budget toward freight corridors that move goods through metro Atlanta, with Henry County among the primary beneficiaries. The state budget includes more than 1.6 billion dollars for the extension and bidirectional expansion of the Interstate 75 express lanes in Henry County, one of the busiest truck routes south of Atlanta.
Additional allocations include 185 million dollars for interchange conversions on State Route 316, 100 million dollars for rural bridge rehabilitation and replacement, and 250 million dollars for local maintenance and improvement grants. State transportation planners project that freight movement in Georgia will nearly double over the next quarter century, which is driving the investment in road capacity.
The metro Atlanta counties of Fulton, DeKalb, Cobb, and Gwinnett anchor a dense distribution network supported by major shippers and carriers, and four Atlanta-area segments rank among the hundred worst freight bottlenecks in the country. State officials also pointed to a new inland port in Gainesville that is expected to shift tens of thousands of truck moves to rail in its first year, easing congestion on metro highways. Carriers operating in the southern metro counties are expected to see construction activity increase through the budget year.
