Georgia Ports Authority's $1.6 billion redevelopment of Ocean Terminal in Savannah has passed the 60% completion mark, FreightWaves reported. A 2,650-foot berth is finished and able to handle large container vessels.

Once complete, the project will raise the terminal's annual capacity from 200,000 twenty-foot equivalent units to 1.75 million TEUs. The authority plans to keep working smaller vessels there until the first phase of container-yard redevelopment is finished in mid-fall 2027, with full yard completion scheduled for the end of 2028.

The terminal's truck gate is fully operational and will ultimately include 12 inbound lanes and six outbound lanes. The authority also funded a $29 million overpass that sends departing trucks directly to U.S. 17 and Interstate 16, which keeps them off neighborhood streets near the terminal.

GPA Chief Executive Griff Lynch told the authority's board on Tuesday that the renovated berth is complete and ready for large ships.

Ocean Terminal is part of GPA's 10-year port master plan, which calls for about $5 billion in capacity investments, including five additional container berths in Savannah and one roll-on/roll-off berth in Brunswick.

Savannah handled 529,523 TEUs in August. Loaded exports totaled 117,242 TEUs, up about 4.2% from a year earlier, and import loads rose 1.5% to 265,859 TEUs, according to GPA.

GPA will outline its fiscal 2026 performance, infrastructure program and strategic outlook at its Savannah State of the Port event on Oct. 14 at the Savannah Convention Center.
