Diesel prices in metro Atlanta climbed above $6 a gallon this month, adding new pressure on Georgia's trucking operators. The average price reached $6.31 per gallon as of a recent Monday morning, according to data cited from AAA. That figure is nearly $3 higher than the average recorded a year earlier, when diesel sold for roughly $3.57 a gallon in the region.
The increase affects fleet operating costs across the freight and logistics sector, which relies heavily on diesel-powered tractors to move goods along Georgia's highway corridors. Fuel is typically one of the largest line items in a trucking company's budget after labor, and a sustained rise of this size can compress margins for independent owner-operators and smaller regional carriers more than it does for larger fleets with fuel-hedging contracts in place.
The run-up in diesel prices comes as freight rates have shown some signs of firming after a prolonged freight recession, leaving carriers to weigh whether they can pass rising fuel costs through to shippers via fuel surcharges or whether they will need to absorb the difference. Georgia's trucking industry remains a significant employer in the state, supporting warehousing, port drayage and long-haul freight operations tied to the Port of Savannah and metro Atlanta distribution hubs.
