PNK Group broke ground on a new distribution center in McDonough, Henry County, that will exceed 1 million square feet when complete, potentially making it one of the largest buildings in the county. Henry County has budgeted more than $2 billion for transportation projects through 2030 to support continued freight and logistics growth in the area.
The groundbreaking comes as the Georgia Freight and Logistics Commission released a report recommending the General Assembly commit $1 billion to $1.5 billion annually to a dedicated fund for statewide freight infrastructure projects. The commission's proposal would authorize the State Road and Tollway Authority to tap private financing to help fund rail projects, truck parking expansion and other freight corridor improvements.
Georgia's logistics sector includes roughly 5,000 companies employing 110,000 people statewide and generating more than $50 billion in annual sales, according to figures cited in the commission's report. Henry County, positioned along key interstate corridors south of Atlanta, has become one of the state's fastest-growing distribution hubs as national retailers and logistics operators seek space close to Atlanta's population base without the higher land costs found closer to the city core.
State lawmakers are expected to take up the freight fund recommendation when the General Assembly reconvenes, though no legislation has yet been introduced.
