Trimac Transportation, ranked No. 64 on the Commercial Carrier Journal's Top 250 list of for-hire carriers, announced this week that it has acquired California Freight, a bulk food-grade trucking company based in Ripon, California. The deal marks Trimac's second acquisition in the state in two years and expands its reach into the dairy, wine, and agricultural supply chains of California's Central Valley.
California Freight began in 1989 as a regional brokerage and added a transportation division in 2012. The carrier now runs a fleet of roughly 250 tractors and nearly 300 tankers, moving raw milk to processing plants across the state's dairy network. Its operations also serve the wine, food and beverage, and broader agricultural sectors from eight trucking terminals and a warehousing division that includes more than 400,000 square feet of food-grade storage in the San Joaquin Valley and Stanislaus County.
Under the agreement, California Freight will keep its name and continue operating as part of the Trimac Family of Companies. Trimac executive Jesse Hanson will step into the role of president at California Freight, working alongside the carrier's existing leadership team. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
Trimac President and CEO Matt Faure said the acquisition builds on California Freight's reputation in the state's agricultural and dairy economy. Ashesh Pansuria of Tenney Group, which advised California Freight on the sale, said the deal gives Trimac a stronger position in liquid food-grade transport paired with an established regional operator.
The acquisition adds to a wave of consolidation among specialized carriers this year as larger fleets look to expand niche capabilities rather than build them from scratch.
