Commercial vehicle enforcement operations in Arizona, California, North Dakota and Kentucky turned up hundreds of safety violations in October, according to FreightWaves reporting on results released by state and federal agencies.
The largest operation ran along Interstate 40 near Flagstaff, Arizona, where state troopers and transportation officials completed 263 inspections and 195 weight checks during a three-day blitz on Oct. 6-8. The Arizona Department of Public Safety said 110 unsafe vehicles and drivers were removed from the roadway. The Arrive Alive Arizona initiative also issued 80 Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance decals to trucks that passed inspection.
In Williston, North Dakota, federal, state and local authorities identified 494 violations during an operation the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration reported on Oct. 8. Inspectors performed 109 inspections, including 20 hazardous materials checks, and recorded 122 out-of-service violations and 47 enforcement actions. FMCSA did not say how many individual drivers or vehicles were removed from service, and the 122 figure counts violations rather than trucks.
California Highway Patrol officers issued 279 citations during an Oct. 13 operation in the Newhall area, with 28 commercial vehicles and 13 drivers placed out of service. In Garden Grove, police completed 90 inspections, found 90 violations, issued 55 citations and placed nine vehicles out of service.
Kentucky State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement East Region reported 1,030 commercial motor vehicle inspections in September across its 25-county jurisdiction. Those inspections produced 612 violations, 79 vehicles placed out of service and 119 hazardous materials inspections. Vehicles placed out of service must have identified safety defects corrected before returning to the road.
